SYNOPSIS: ‘Wicked Sisters’ by Alma De Groen was shortlisted for the 2003 NSW Premier’s Literary Award and is equal parts dramatic and deliciously funny.

Taking place over one evening in the Blue Mountains, this 90 minute play sees four estranged female friends reunite to mourn and reminisce the death of brilliant scientist but brutally selfish Alec Hobbes, who was married to one of the women, Meridee.

As the night goes on, hard truths emerge providing humour and horror before it dissolves into a savage battleground. Exploring the themes of grief, sisterhood loyalty, the loneliness of ageing, biological competition, attitudes to money, altruism and artificial intelligence, this exciting Aussie tragi-comedy play is guaranteed to create conversation.

ROLES

Meridee: (precast - Susie Sparkes): Uptight, still grieving the death of Alec who was quite controlling over her, and seemingly has a motive for bringing these old friends together for this one evening.

Lydia: (55-65) an energetic real estate agent with a very active post-divorce love life and a penchant for younger men to avoid feeling lonely.

Judith: (55-65) unruffled, well-groomed and deceitful publicist. She regards men her age as Neanderthals.

Hester: (55-65) a clever, ageing hippie type who was one of Alec's students. She is the outsider of the group and believes in altruism and a moral universe.

AUDITION PROCESS

Present a 1-2 min rehearsed monologue that links to one or more of the themes of the play as listed above such as friendship, ageing, etc.

Participate in 2 scene work improvisations with Susie and other auditionees. Relevant sides will be provided prior for familiarisation.

If you wish to access the script we recommend accessing an online version via https://apt.org.au/  (Australian Plays) or contacting your local library or bookstore.
